This involved assessing and identifying complex needs of patients and managing them in a multi-disciplinary team. This was the only team of its kind in the Trust.

Medical Research Council (MRC) research worker & Honorary Consultant since October 1992
Employed as an MRC research worker on a study assessing the pathways into care of ethnic minorities. I have held a senior lecturer and honorary consultant contract since 1 October 1992. My primary research project was looking at the incidence rates of psychoses across various ethnic communities. In addition to all first contacts with psychoses we carried out a community survey in Southall. All first contact patients were assessed with PSE, Life Events; Achievement/Expectation; Mental disorder beliefs; Acculturation (Cultural/Identity) and their relatives interviewed with all of the above except PSE and life events. In addition obstetric and past psychiatric personal histories (PPHS) are obtained from the relatives. The first contact study and one year follow up are complete.

I was involved in setting up a similar project in Trinidad which has a strong mixture of Indian and African origin populations. Subsequently we have negotiated successfully with psychiatrists in Barbados, and are in negotiation with Jamaica to extend the study.
